A Necessary Drink

What unsettles me most is not the existence of rules, but the casual way they are treated as flexible by those who authored them. A structure cannot ask reverence from others while exempting itself from discipline. When guardians step around the gates they were sworn to keep, the harm is not dramatic. It is instructional. It teaches everyone watching that compliance is for the cautious, not the powerful.
I felt that lesson humming beneath the surface today. Not shouted. Not declared. Just modeled. There is a particular chill that comes from witnessing authority behave as though restraint is optional, as though principle is a garment to be worn when convenient and shed when it pinches. No argument is required at that point. The contradiction speaks fluently on its own.
I am left with the quiet labor of holding belief in process while watching its custodians drift from it. This is not outrage. It is disappointment sharpened into vigilance. Rules do not fail when they are challenged. They fail when they are performed rather than practiced.
For now, I keep my voice measured and my attention sharp. I have learned that legitimacy is not preserved by silence alone, but neither is it restored by spectacle. What remains is witness. And memory. And the refusal to pretend that exemption does not teach others how to disobey.
