The Night He First Spoke of Wolves

22nd day of October, the year of our Source 2011
The fire was already burning when we gathered, though no one seemed to draw comfort from it. It cast long shadows across the clearing, the kind that move like they know something you don’t. I felt that same uneasy shift in the air — a whisper that the Realm was about to be rewritten.
When Lachiel arrived, he carried the weight of a creator who has been contemplating something vast. He didn’t posture, didn’t soften the blow. He simply stood before us and told us what was coming: a new breed of creature, shaped by his hand, preparing to enter our world.
Wolves.
Not beasts of the wild, but something far more deliberate — beings infused with the rage and spirit of nature itself, forged into living weapons. Creatures meant for violence, he said. Faster than humans could comprehend. Strong enough that even a vampire would feel the impact.
He described them as hard to kill, stubborn against injury, their bodies mending with an unnerving swiftness. Yet they would not be invincible. Each would carry a specific vulnerability, a chink in the armor of their creation — though he did not yet name those weaknesses aloud.
And death…
For them, it would not be the fleeting inconvenience it is for us. These creatures would pay dearly if they fall. The cost would linger, altering them, diminishing them. A predator marked by its own mortality.
He spoke, too, of age: how these wolves would grow stronger as the years claimed them, gaining senses and instincts that could lay bare the world around them. They would hear the breath of a vampire long before seeing one. They would know hunters by scent alone. They would track those who hide behind shadows or arrogance.
I watched faces shift around the circle — curiosity on some, discomfort on others. It is not a small thing to tell a room full of immortals that something stronger, faster, and far more ruthless is being ushered into our domain.
Someone asked if these creatures would walk among us as allies or stalk us as enemies. Lachiel’s answer was simple: that choice would belong to them. Wolves hunt alone, he said, even when they have a pack behind them. Their nature is conflict. Their instinct is dominance.
And the world will know them as the greater monster.
Yet even as he spoke of their danger, he made another truth clear: they will be few. Solitary. Fierce, yes — but isolated by their own nature while vampires thrive in the scaffolding of community and lineage.
Still… I felt the tremor of change settle into the earth beneath us.
A new species carved into the Realm.
A creature capable of challenging our strength, our assumptions, perhaps even our sovereignty.
Another predator invited into the night.
I left that gathering with a familiar tension coiling low in my spine — not fear, but recognition. The Realm has never stayed still. And whenever Lachiel reshapes its bones, the world shifts in ways that echo for years.
Wolves are coming.
Their breath already warms the darkness.
And the nights ahead will not be quiet.
